Cocktail Stirrers.  1946.

Formally known as Scheffel Hall, these cocktail stirrers came from Joe King's German-American Rathskeller located at 190 3rd Avenue in New York City.  Doesn't sound familiar?  Well, everyone knew of this hot spot in the 1940's, including my parent's, who kept these plastic keepsakes as a reminder of their salad days.  Seventy years hence, they have survived the ravages of time, courtesy of my junk drawer.  On the front of the stirrers is written the address of the famed cabaret, so one day I set out to find if anything remained of the place.  Surprisingly, the building was still there and when I went inside, I was told that it looked much as it did in its heyday.  It had also, apparently, been a favorite writing spot for O. Henry.  Walking around, I got the strange feeling that I'd been there before.  Through the magic of the internet I learned that Joe King's had later become the well-known jazz club Fat Tuesdaysa place that I used to frequent when I was about the same age as my parent's were when they were going to Joe King's!  I like having this heretofore unknown connection to my folks.  It justified my having kept their keepsakes, while also proving the theory of six degrees of separation.  Only with cocktail stirrers.
